Secure tile fixing

The correct choice of tile adhesive

mira tile adhesive for all types of jobs

The key to good tile work lies in the quality of the tile adhesive, as properties such as adhesion strength and flexibility are crucial for ensuring that the tiled surface achieves the necessary strength and long lifetime.

In addition, it is important to look at the adhesive’s working and open time, strength, and setting time. This is why all mira tile adhesives are labelled with a CE classification detailing the product’s characteristics.

For example, if you’re not completely sure of the conditions, it can be a good idea to use an S2 classified tile adhesive, which has over twice the flexibility of an S1 classified adhesive.

CE classification – how to read it

In order for a tile adhesive to be CE-certified, it must at minimum fulfil the adhesive requirements which are described below. These requirements are tested in water, under heat conditions of +70°C and alternating freeze/thaw cycles.

Material

C

Stipris

2

Setting time

F

Firmness

T

Working/Open time

E

Flexibility

S2

C Material

The letter C classifies the adhesive as a cement-based product.

T Firmness

The declaration’s letter T (thixotropic) means that the tile on a horizontal surface may slide a maximum of 0.5 mm. If unclassified, the tile may slide a max. 2 mm.

2 Stipris

In addition to the C marking, a declaration for tile adhesive MUST show an adhesion strength class 1 or 2, where 2 is the highest.

Class C1 = > 0,5 N/mm²

Class C2 = > 1,0 N/mm² after full hardening.

E Working/open time

The declaration’s letter E (extra-long open time) means that the tile can be mounted/adjusted up until 30 minutes after affixing the tile to the surface. If unclassified, the standard is 20 minutes.

F Džiūvimo laikas

The declaration’s letter F (fast) means that the tile adhesive sets quickly and has achieved a minimum adhesive strength of 0,5 MPa after six hours setting time.

S2 Flexibility

Only tile adhesive that has been declared as C1 or C2 can fulfil the requirements for S1 and S2 testing. In order to be classified as S1, the tile adhesive must have a flexibility of 2.5 mm. For S2, the requirement is 5 mm.

CE classification – what you should consider

Strength C2 is often seen as better than C1. This can be very misleading, as the strength only shows its ability to stay put. E.g., a 20×20 cm ceramic tile requires a tensile strength of approx. four tonnes for C2 and two tonnes for C1 to pull the tile off the surface. C1 tensile strength is usually sufficient in all indoor settings (apart from very challenging industrial environments). More interesting are S1 and S2 , which indicate the elastic deformation capability of the adhesive. Tile adhesives that are not classified as S1 or S2 are legal to use but have no defined elasticity and can be as hard as cement.

Today’s ceramic tiles are generally sealed and have virtually no absorbency, and they often have a white release agent on the tile surface to prevent the tile from fusing to the mould during production. Unfortunately, this release agent makes it harder for the adhesive to bind. This is why you should take care to choose adhesives with maximum bonding strength to avoid poor adhesion. Adhesives with S2 have the greatest flexibility and thus also the maximum adhesion.

Tile installation

Paviršius

The greater the possible level of deformations of the substrate and the larger the tiles, the thicker the adhesive layer and the higher the flexibility class of the adhesive used for installation should be. Tiles are considered to be large, when one or more sides are longer than 30 cm and no side exceeds 120 cm.

The tolerance of the substrate must be a maximum of +/- 2 mm for every two metres. A tile adhesive can be used to compensate for this unevenness. Tiles that are larger than 120 cm in length require a more level substrate than smaller tiles. In that case the surface must be levelled with the fine-grained self-levelling compound mira 6600 cemplan, which can be applied in a layer of 10 to practically zero millimetres.

Sąnaudos

Kuo didesnę apkrovą turi atlaikyti paviršius, tuo svarbiau, kad plytelių klijai padengtų kuo daugiau plytelės klijuojamą plotą.

Walls – On surfaces with a lighter load, it is necessary for the tile adhesive to cover at least 80% of the back of the tile. The tile adhesive must be properly rubbed onto the substrate and the tile pressed firmly into the adhesive.

Floors – On floors, the mixture should, as a rule, cover 100% of the back of the tile, in order to prevent the tiles from breaking. In living spaces with only a light load, the minimum coverage is 80%. In a heavy-duty environment, proper contact between the tile and the adhesive is especially important.

Naudojant didesnes plyteles, klijus ant plytelės tepti rekomenduojama dantyta mentele.

Technika

To achieve the correct layer thickness, the notched trowel must be kept at the correct angle (70 – 80 º). The thicker the adhesive layer, the longer the drying time is as well.
